- What’s all this ‘Traditional’ / ‘Simplified’ and ‘Mandarin’ / ‘Cantonese’ business?
When referring to the spoken Chinese language, there are two main variants; Mandarin and Cantonese. As a spoken language they are very different with Cantonese spoken in Hong Kong and some parts of mainland China, and Mandarin spoken in Taiwan and the majority of mainland China. However, the written forms of the language are almost identical, meaning you do not have to make a decision whether you require a Cantonese or Mandarin Chinese site.
However, there are two forms of written Chinese; one employing simplified characters and the other employing traditional characters. For the most part a person in a country such as Taiwan that uses traditional characters will be able to read simplified characters and vice versa. Whether you wish to use simplified or traditional characters on your business will largely depend upon your target market. Traditional characters are used throughout Taiwan and Hong Kong whilst simplified characters are used within mainland China. You may wish to have two versions of your business card; one with simplified characters and one with traditional, though often this will be unnecessary.
If you need any assistance deciding whether to use Traditional or Simplified characters on your business card, don’t hesitate to contact us.
